Our Farmhouse Story
Hi Friends! If you follow me on Instagram, you probably know that my husband and I are right in the middle of an entire home remodel. We purchased the farmhouse that I grew up in, and that has been in the family for generations. I get tons of questions about the progress, so I wanted to share the full story here. Follow along on Instagram for updates on the progress.
I remember so many vivid details about the home I grew up in- the feeling of “home” pulling up the driveway, the birds chirping in the trees, picking berries off the bushes in the yard, the joy of riding on the trails through the woods and to grandma + papa’s house, how the sunshine lit up the entire house on summer mornings, fires in the fireplace on Christmas morning… I could go on forever about what I love about the house. It gave me the best childhood. I always dreamt of one day raising my own family there.
When my husband (fiance at the time) and I began looking for our first home, we looked at dozens of houses. All fixer uppers. We were up for some renovations, but everything in our price range either required way too much work or did not have property. We were about to look at one more house before we were going to hold off on the house hunt for a bit, when our realtor notified us the showing had been cancelled. We called it quits and were going to save up some more money to afford something that didn’t need so much work right off the bat. I’m not joking when I say that within 30 minutes of our decision, my dad called me asking if we were still looking for a house because he had decided to sell his home- my childhood home that I have dreamed of owning for as long as I can remember. It was a God thing!
We wanted to move in quickly because we were planning our wedding, so we just repainted with plans to remodel down the road. A couple of years, a baby and another on the way later, we decided to begin. The kitchen was the worst so we began there, and since we were creating a more open concept space, we ended up doing the dining room and living room as well. We gutted everything down to the studs, removed a wall, moved an exterior wall and created a new ceiling. Not quite sure what we were thinking, being that I was already 4 months pregnant, but there was no turning back at that point.
We still have some finishing touches to complete, and a lot more projects ahead of us. But it has turned out more beautiful than I could have ever hoped for. I hope you enjoy these transformation photos as much as I do!
